  • Mukkabaaz

This is a film whose lack of ostensible polish works to enhance its rough-and-tumble flavor: Kashyap and the film are at its most sure-footed when they are calling out discrimination, across the board. That’s when their punches land in exactly the right place.

I’d enjoyed the first one while it lasted. I had fun in this one too, once I got past the whole ‘Come Children, Let’s Make A Spy Story For You’ explanatory mode of the flick, directed this time by Ali Abbas Zafar.

  • Ittefaq

A good murder mystery leads you by the hand but doesn’t advertise its wares, takes care to keep it taut, and delivers a satisfactory payoff. Despite a few niggles, this brand new Ittefaq, which takes broad pointers from the 1969 original of the same name, manages to pull it off.

But as often as the film astutely touches upon the tough choices, and the problems that can crop up, it leaves them, and us, hanging. You are left wanting a little more.

  • Ranchi Diaries

...this comes off as a random assemblage of scenes– in forests (that’s where the ‘Naxals’ live), a large mansion (that’s where the bad guy stays), police chowkis, and a crumbling building which is meant to house a bank—trying to pass off as a film.

  • Chef

There are some interesting flavours here, but ‘Chef’ feels derivative, and doesn’t come together as a fully satisfactory dish. And that’s got to do with the uneven, stodgy writing.

The attempt is admirable even if a trifle uneven. Content is something that is easy to jigger with, even within mainstream constraints; experimenting with form is much harder, both for the creator and the viewer.

  • Judwaa 2

For a comedy whose plot would make a wafer look thin, the lines have to be razor sharp, and delivered in just the right rhythm. This is where the director falters, even as his son tries his best to give us two for the price of one on the other end of the screen.

  • Bhoomi

Dutt’s face is kept in close-up for much of the film, and there is still power in it. This is an actor who can explode off the screen, given the right story. Maybe he needs something much better told to vent his anger.

  • Simran

Kangana keeps us watching, though. With her plain varnished face, she comes across as a real, solid, complex woman, someone you can reach out and touch. When she’s on the top of her game, she’s glorious. Pity the storyline let’s her down.

It’s also the thickly-populated circuitous plot, which goes back and forth in time, which comes in the way of a solid crime thriller cum study of the making of a gangster.

Only it’s 2017 not the 70s, and whatever you might do – add some spit-and-polish and intrigue and new faces, and create funny dialogues – the film comes off as old wine, in a not very new bottle, which we have to sip for over 2.5 hours.

  • Qaidi Band

More realism would have made this a film we could have believed in. But we do take away the young faces with us, especially Anya Singh whose bright-eyed earnestness is wholly convincing.

...we also wish that there was some more comic-book energy in the plot, which keeps sliding and slowing. That’s the only way spoofs can remain spiffy, and worthy of our complete attention.
