Critic reviews and ratings

  • ...a film that is both a sleek and original thriller as well as a throwback to older Bollywood suspense dramas.

  • ...is not a taut thriller that you expect it to be. But if patience is your asset, this unhurried suspense drama can be watched for Akshaye Khanna's crackling screen presence, acting prowess and sublime charm.

  • ...tries its best to create intrigue, and doesn’t give the audience a lot of time to think twice about a single event. That is its biggest achievement.

  • ...is a smartly designed taut thriller. The best part of the film is when the time you feel it ends, the actual mystery begins.

  • Instead of the having the edge-of-the-seat quality that brain twisters ideally should, this one is a tiresome cat-and-mouse chase.

  • ...is a whocareswhodunit but what it does have, as compensation, is the shock and suggestiveness of pulp served hot.

  • Director Abhay Chopra, who is also credited as one of the writers of the film, maintains the suspense throughout. Whodunnits are far and few in Bollywood, and Ittefaq is one of the nicer ones.

  • A good murder mystery leads you by the hand but doesn’t advertise its wares, takes care to keep it taut, and delivers a satisfactory payoff. Despite a few niggles, this brand new Ittefaq, which takes broad pointers from the 1969 original of the same name, manages to pull it off.

  • ...is a solid modern whodunit. It looks as slick as any Hollywood production. Even with its mistakes, the crime mystery manages to impress with its logical and clinical writing.

    Critic rating (?)

  • The best thrillers are those that can stand up to scrutiny. In these films, when you go back, post-reveal, and question what you saw, the premise still holds. Ittefaq doesn’t manage that. But it has enough verve and smarts to keep you hooked.

  • I also don’t remember the last time I watched a full-on, no-nonsense, whodunit Hindi mainstream murder mystery in a theatre, with no way to talk about it but to urge you to see it, because that’s the only way we can discuss it any further.

  • ...It's not devoid of shockers but it's not unpredictable either.

    Critic rating (?)

  • If one were to list the things that counter this film's ability to deliver as a tight thriller, it would be a long one. While it's unfair to compare, if this remake were to be viewed as a standalone watch, it would still barely hold up.

    49

    Critic rating (?)

  • Hurried in its story-telling and a little too relaxed in its execution, Ittefaq makes the biggest mistake a thriller could make - it tells a gripping story instead of showing it.

    49

    Critic rating (?)

  • The look and feel is in place and so is the big twist. These two factors make Ittefaq a serviceable thriller, but not a genre-defining experience.

    49

    Critic rating (?)

  • It’s well shot and skillfully executed, but the big climactic twist is entirely unconvincing.

  • ...could have marked the entry of Abhay Chopra as a graceful, mysterious, demanding story teller that leaves a baffling effect on the audience, the helmer shows traces of his potential by creating and sustaining the mood of the genre but his calibre as a story teller is defeated by the plot.

    49

    Critic rating (?)

  • ...may not be perfect, but it is clever enough. Bollywood rarely does thrillers well. This one is not brilliant, but it is fun while it lasts.

    44

    Critic rating (?)

  • ...is a weak show and doesn't get the grammar of whodunit right.

    39

    Critic rating (?)

  • If the lead actors: Sidharth Malhotra and Sonakshi Sinha weren't so passionless in trying hard to be mysterious, this film could have been less painful to watch.

    39

    Critic rating (?)

  • ...the old Ittefaq, despite you knowing the spoiler, can still hold you in thrall. The new one, despite making a marketing strategy out of a spoiler, just isn’t thrilling enough.

    39

    Critic rating (?)

  • As a tense thriller, Ittefaq is underwhelming...

    39

    Critic rating (?)

  • In truth, it is not much of a murder mystery, since you can predict the end by estimating the running time of the movie. When conclusive evidence is found to nail one of the suspects, and it seems to be all over bar the conviction, there is still 15 minutes to go.

    39

    Critic rating (?)

  • Despite the relatively brisk running time and a double murder at its heart, the case runs cold and Abhay Chopra's film emerges unforgivably dull.
