Critic reviews and ratings

  • ...the animation effort itself is immature and several notches below those of Hollywood films. Yet the dub effort by the Bollywood superstars uplifts this epic, making it enjoyable.

  • The USP of Mahabharat is that the characters in the film bear a strong resemblance to the actors lending them their voices. The film should work for two more reasons: the riveting story and the superior quality animation [a handful of scenes notwithstanding].

  • ...should be given the credit for being a film with sincere attempt and ambition. However, its lack of vision, especially in terms of technology, works completely against it.

    Critic rating (?)

  • Nobody really expected Mahabharat to offer anything close to Hollywood standard but when you have worked on a film for seven years like how the makers of Mahabharat claim, at least ensure you can tell a story engagingly.

  • ...it's not easy to make animated films and - unlike live-action movies where magic maybe created in a moment on set - it requires toil and an imaginative force that must sustain for months and years. And in Mahabharat this endeavour shows, earning it an extra half star. But where are the new ideas?

  • If only the makers had to pay that much extra attention to the animation and execution like they did with the characters and their faces, this epic would have been quite different and would have gone down well with the kids.

  • But dumbing down Mahabharat’s provocative and serious framework for a film that cannot even provide visual enchantment fails to fulfill it purpose even to its young audience.

    Critic rating (?)

  • There is a laboured attempt here to prove that animation has come to animated life in Indian cinema. Sadly, it ends up proving only the opposite. We've a long way to go.

    39

    Critic rating (?)

  • ...turns out to be a no show in its effort to entertain the audience.

    29

    Critic rating (?)

  • ...a shoddy and insipid representation of a mighty mythology which really has no potential to entice the kids.

    29

    Critic rating (?)

  • One wishes our filmmakers quit mythological stories and gave our little viewers more age-appropriate stories that are full of magic and fun.

    29

    Critic rating (?)

  • ...sadly, lacks more than technical prowess; it lacks imagination.

    29

    Critic rating (?)

  • With barely anything impressive to mention about the animation version of India’s greatest mythological epic saga, Jayantilal Gada’s Mahabharat is devoid of reasons to watch it.

    19

    Critic rating (?)

  • Mahabharat deserves a liberal reading but apart from Karna’s episode Amaan has remained true to the traditional rendering of the epic and there is hardly any effort to delve into the moral dilemmas of the characters.
