Critic reviews and ratings

  • ...is a bloodily frenetic rage, an outrage of emotions packed in a tight dark thriller that worships de noir tones and is brutally passionate.

  • ...is high on style with good performances and thrilling moments but has an average storyline.

  • The film begins well with a power-packed action scene, and dives straight into the drama. What it does lack is a tighter edit and dialogues that could elevate the narrative.

  • ...benefits vastly from clever casting, Vikas Sivaraman’s slick and attractive cinematography, and a distanced approach to wrenching matters of the heart.

  • ...what could have been a delicious thriller turns out to be merely a watchable and forgettable revenge-drama...

  • ...is a flawed but entertaining product and would be especially liked by those who are fans of slasher flicks.

    Critic rating (?)

  • It rides on the thrill quotient, has some good performances and a good looking pair at its centre but that’s about it. The plot ends up looking like a mockery of a subject that needed a better storytelling.

  • It's all over the place, and yet the mystery and the characters are intriguing.

  • ...the proceedings get so tedious and laboured, we hope some of those numerous drugs passing hands would be included in the price of this multiplex ticket.

    Critic rating (?)

  • A whole lot of time is wasted setting up the story; far less is assigned to unravelling the mystery or providing adequate backstory to all the characters.

  • The story of Malang offers nothing new and struggles to establish itself throughout.

    39

    Critic rating (?)

  • If you are seeking manic, mesmeric madness, Malang certainly isn't the film for you. But it might just live up to modest expectations.

  • Remove the stylised layers, foot-tapping music, Greek God-like leads, and the crisp runtime, and most of Mohit Suri’s films are essentially explorations of toxic masculinity. Malang is no different. It ticks all the boxes in the Mohit Suri-checklist, but does little else.

    39

    Critic rating (?)

  • ...there is very little of plot or character that you remember. Recollected in tranquility, the movie passes by in a blur of police sirens, killings, snorting, and skimpily dressed people partying like there is no tomorrow.

    Critic rating (?)

  • There is both a love story and some good songs in his new thriller Malang. There are also, to be fair, some interesting ideas floating around. But those ideas never come together coherently; they’re lost in a film that is more interested in surface-level stuff.

    Critic rating (?)

  • The film is unintentionally funny at points, mildly clever in its second-half and there is a hint of pertinent discussion about encounters and justice within the system but all that is eclipsed by the multitude inane reasoning in the film, that gives you neither sukoon nor mazaa.

    39

    Critic rating (?)

  • Here's a witless thriller so far removed from reality yet so consumed by its own self-seriousness, no amount of slick photography (Vikas Sivaraman), soaring soundtrack (Mithoon, Ved Sharma) or steady supply of conspiracy (Aseem Arrora) can salvage its tepid material.

    Critic rating (?)

  • Here’s a film which is a perfect example of how Bollywood struggles with creating a plot in which every single thread counts.

    Critic rating (?)

  • Mohit Suri’s film is set in Goa for a reason. It allows him to show smoking, drinking, drugs, rave parties, lots of skin and random sex without having to bother about a story. So, he didn’t bother.
