    I feel for Shaad Ali. Ever since his best film, the criminally underrated Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, bombed, he’s been at sea. Remaking his mentor’s works may be a way to keep himself visible, but someone should tell him an echo is not a voice.

  • Mukkabaaz

    I loved Mukkabaaz, but it took me a while to put a frame on it, to decide how to look at it. Kashyap’s reputation is so festooned with international art-house hosannas – screenings at Cannes! reviews in Variety! – that it’s easy to forget how rooted in Hindi cinema he is.

  • Monsoon Shootout

    ...was a little too low-key for my taste — it isn’t quite as existential as I’d have liked, and the butter-smooth filmmaking could have used more rough edges. But there’s still a lot of skill on display, not least from Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

  • Miss Tanakpur Haazir Ho

    The other thing that makes us uneasy is the persistent doubt that these villagers are being paraded about for our amusement, that they’re being made a little too colourful just so we can sit back in our multiplexes and laugh at them.
