  • Bombay Talkies

...a unique experiment that works very well. The collaboration between four leading directors suggests a confidence that was rare in the industry even a decade ago.

  • Vicky Donor

...is one of those rare Hindi films that work purely on the strength of writing and performances.

  • Queen

Ultimately Queen is Kangana’s triumph. I left the theatre thinking about Rani and how the rest of her life would pan out. It’s not often you do that with a Bollywood character. This one is special.

  • Shahid

Shahid is Raj Kumar’s triumph. His Shahid has strength, anguish and a controlled anger, but also real charm. His smile lights up the frame. See Shahid for him.

  • Cocktail

He (Imtiaz Ali) creates a love triangle that references Archie's comics, the 1980s television show Three's Company and the oeuvre of Aditya Chopra-Karan Johar (foreign locales, decadent Western lifestyle, superior Indian values) and yet feels new.

  • Krrish 3

...isn’t a patch on the best superhero films made in Hollywood but it is a step forward for Bollywood.

  • Raanjhanaa

...despite these flaws, I’m recommending that you see it. Especially for Dhanush who proves that eventually looks don’t matter. Neither does size. All that towers is talent.

  • Bhoothnath Returns

...is unnecessarily bloated. It has far too much sermonising. The narrative is simplistic and naïve. And yet I recommend that you see the film — because it is also heartfelt, genuinely moving and, for the first half at least, slyly funny.

  • Gangs Of Wasseypur

...is by turns absorbing and frustrating. Watching it feels like gorging on too much good food, leaving you feeling more exhausted than satiated. But there is enough in the sound and fury to enjoy.

  • Dhoom 3

...see Dhoom 3 with your expectations at half-mast. It's not the popcorn thrill ride that I expected. There isn't enough joy in it. But Aamir and the stupendous action make it worth watching.

  • Student Of The Year

Karan Johar's forte is excess. He creates fantastical worlds brimming with beautiful people and expensive things and yet anchors them in high emotion. His films work as both designer porn and soap opera. The pleasure you derive from his films is directly connected to your tolerance of candy floss.

  • Fukrey

...the problem with Fukrey is that the characters and milieu are more engaging than the plot, which gets more far-fetched as it thickens.

  • Jab Tak Hai Jaan

...is too tangled to transport you. At almost 180 minutes, it also requires enormous patience. But I recommend that you see it. Because only Yash Chopra could make heartache so attractive and ennobling that his characters wear it like a badge of honor.

  • Revolver Rani

If you like uplifting, cheerful cinema, then this isn’t the movie for you. But if, like me, you can enjoy bad people doing bad things, then Revolver Rani will be fun.
