  • Pataakha

A similar nation state in India, with room for a myriad political innuendos to co-exist, allows Bhardwaj a lot of freedom in his Shakespeare adaptations. Most importantly, there are full fledged plots to interpret, instead of half baked ones like in ‘Pataakha’. Plus, there are 34 more plays he can still work on.

  • Manmarziyaan

With ‘Mukkabaaz’ last year, and with ‘Manmarziyaan’ today, he (Kashyap) looks more and more like a mainstream film maker with a fine command of film technique, whose unique and original perspective has been merged, unobtrusively, into an amorphous entity called pop cinema.

  • Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi

The film has a few watchable moments, courtesy the deadpan delivery style of Jimmy Sheirgill, and an Urdu spouting Pakistani character (Piyush Mishra), a relic from the first film. But as a sequel, it is disappointing.

  • Genius

...is a noisy film, with hysterical action and dramatic sounds fighting for space with this gnome like debutant reaching for the sky, aspiring to instant action and romantic hero status.

  • Karwaan

By the end of the film, you have enjoyed the scenery, laughed at Irrfan and his PJs, and ask the question on the tip of your tongue - what on earth were the makers of this movie smoking?

  • Mulk

This is the essence of freedom that film makers still have; to make movies that reflect on how life should be, and not necessarily on how it turns out.

  • Baaghi 2

...the film diverts us from the totally unconvincing dialogue delivery style of Tiger. It also establishes a right leaning ideological position that always works well with an action movie audience.

  • Mukkabaaz

It is not the acting, the content, or the ideology that is wrong with this movie. What jars is the choice of a hackneyed and overused cinematic style that divides characters and conflicts into simplistic demarcations of black and white.

  • Kaalakaandi

The film is funny in specific contexts, but, overall, the interlinked stories pass no real comment on the quality of life in this heterogenous metropolis. The movie drifts along nicely, until you get a little tired, and wish that it all leads to a quick and rousing conclusion.

  • Ittefaq

In truth, it is not much of a murder mystery, since you can predict the end by estimating the running time of the movie. When conclusive evidence is found to nail one of the suspects, and it seems to be all over bar the conviction, there is still 15 minutes to go.

  • Raabta

...starts off promisingly with two energized actors in Rajput and Sanon hitting it off as soon as they meet, disintegrates thereafter, and ends up as pretty much unwatchable.

  • Begum Jaan

...is a disappointingly loud and hectoring film, with few scenes that allow the cast to be nuanced in the portrayal of their characters.

  • Trapped

...is a disappointing film from a good director. What surprises you is the mismatch between a subject and the natural style of Vikramaditya Motwane.

  • Badrinath Ki Dulhania

The movie positions itself in popular culture as advocating the freedom of a woman to choose career over marriage. However, broken down into its individual segments, what we get is a virtual endorsement of harassment as a legitimate tool of persuasion.

  • Rangoon

...it is all the more startling to see what Bhardwaj does to the scenario that he so painstakingly creates in Rangoon. He ‘Bollywoodizes’ it; to a degree bordering on the absurd.

  • M.S. Dhoni

The Achilles heel of this film, a sporting injury and a Greek myth of a tragic flaw that makes a hero mortal, is, ironically, the refusal to see MS as a man, once he has been turned into a God.

  • Banjo

...is a sincere and well intentioned film that has some watchable sequences, but fails eventually, as the sum of its parts just don't add up.

  • Parched

...is a nice looking film that is reasonably well acted, but it is too self consciously written and visualized to be credible, as intended, for an argument on the empowerment of women in rural Rajasthan.
