  • Jabariya Jodi

...is over-plotted – characters keep getting married, kidnapped, nearly married and separated. Folks slap each other, which counts as humor. And the narrative swings wildly like there is no one steering it.

  • Jab Tak Hai Jaan

...is too tangled to transport you. At almost 180 minutes, it also requires enormous patience. But I recommend that you see it. Because only Yash Chopra could make heartache so attractive and ennobling that his characters wear it like a badge of honor.

  • Jab Harry Met Sejal

Imtiaz and Shah Rukh coming together should have created a romantic classic. Instead Imtiaz has made his weakest film to date. Jab Harry Met Sejal doesn’t touch your insides. It’s not truthful enough to move you.

  • Ittefaq

The best thrillers are those that can stand up to scrutiny. In these films, when you go back, post-reveal, and question what you saw, the premise still holds. Ittefaq doesn’t manage that. But it has enough verve and smarts to keep you hooked.

  • Ishqiya

I know its only January but I think its safe to say that Ishqiya is the most crackling film you’ll see this year. It’s feisty and sly and very, very sexy.

  • Housefull 2

...has exactly the same mix of stars, foreign locations, farcical plot and spectacularly dim-witted comedy as the first Housefull.  This is the cinematic equivalent of junk food - when you walk in, you know exactly what you're going to get.

  • Housefull

There is no craft or narrative or characterisation to speak of. Random events and characters, lies and misunderstandings serve to create a low-IQ comedy.

  • Highway

Imtiaz skillfully creates moments that are at once, tender, funny and fragile. But my problem was that I simply didn’t buy into the story.

  • Hichki

...is a genuinely earnest film made with heart. But it doesn’t take enough risks and consequently doesn’t touch a raw nerve in the way that Taare Zameen Par did. But it’s always nice to see a talented actress with all guns blazing.

  • Haunted

...mist, screeching doors, books that fall by themselves and blaring background music that insists that you be scared. I was trying not to laugh out loud.
