You brace yourself for the highest degrees of scathing cynicism when you walk in to a film about India's election process. You walk out with a smile that balances the skepticism with healthy hopefulness. Those are just a few “when was the last time that happened” packed in 100+ minutes.

  • Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

There is nothing profound about Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara; neither does it bring any insight that you and I don't already have from our own relationships. But, it connects from the word go.

Kudos to writing that got me hooked to wrestling for the last hour or so. This for a person who gets easily bored in wrestling films, let alone the sport itself.

  • Mulk

An extremely gripping courtroom drama despite the standard and more or less predictable ups-downs-climax. Helped by rock-solid writing and performances.

Of course, it supports an ideology, has an agenda and is prejudiced. The real question is, would we be surprised if we read a page-7 headline of such an incident? Would we be shocked if we knew for sure it really happened? No, right? Exactly why such films need to be made.

  • Love Sex Aur Dhokha

Each of the three stories has a newspaper story item quality about it and thus is as enchanting as that can get. But the novel way in which it is recorded and narrated is engrossing. But, be warned it is not your movie if you are the kind who takes offense easily or can't handle non-escapist cinema.

Gritty film that makes you uncomfortable enough for it to stay long after you leave the theater. Yes, that makes for a good film.

  • Mardaani 2

The makers have obviously worked on improving the aspects that were little off in the first episode while making what was done well even better. Except for a couple of quibbles, Mardaani 2 works as a thriller for sure.

An extremely quirky atmosphere is created by the camera, the narrative, the sound, the music and Vidya Balan. An experience that might seem incomplete if not watched on the big screen.

Powerful. Moving. Will empower women, might even awaken men. Real in its own way, filling you with hope.

  • The Dirty Picture

It's dirty and you'll love it. For its wit even if might seem a little over-written. For its nerve even if the after-taste is that of an under-cooked story. For Vidya Balan because she is entertainment!

As good an adaption as it could be, even if it loses pace every once in a while, the other elements keep it going.

  • Gully Boy

You are not once distracted from the run-down underdog story, the almost voyeuristic gaze at the poor, and even the touch-and-go attitude towards a range of serious issues like wealth and gender inequality, domestic violence, drug abuse and parental pressure. That’s the power of its dialogue, lyrics, production design, performances, and of course its music.

...is fun to sit through. It could've solely stood tall on the clever stories. But lovely performances and to-the-tee casting only add to the entertainment quotient.

...has a story which weaves in and out of a subject that is taboo, that too in an enjoyable and entertaining manner.
