  • Dangal

Kudos to writing that got me hooked to wrestling for the last hour or so. This for a person who gets easily bored in wrestling films, let alone the sport itself.

You brace yourself for the highest degrees of scathing cynicism when you walk in to a film about India's election process. You walk out with a smile that balances the skepticism with healthy hopefulness. Those are just a few “when was the last time that happened” packed in 100+ minutes.

  • Love Sex Aur Dhokha

Each of the three stories has a newspaper story item quality about it and thus is as enchanting as that can get. But the novel way in which it is recorded and narrated is engrossing. But, be warned it is not your movie if you are the kind who takes offense easily or can't handle non-escapist cinema.

  • Gully Boy

You are not once distracted from the run-down underdog story, the almost voyeuristic gaze at the poor, and even the touch-and-go attitude towards a range of serious issues like wealth and gender inequality, domestic violence, drug abuse and parental pressure. That’s the power of its dialogue, lyrics, production design, performances, and of course its music.

  • Panga

A charming, uplifting film, about a mother going about the business of being a mother, the warmth of which you will feel well after you have left the theatre.

  • Omerta

Omertà is a work of intense, sweeping and frightening moral clarity. Unerring, unflinching and unrelenting, the result is a devastatingly, seriously good film.

  • AK vs AK

Meta has a certain charm. But the tell-don’t-show climax that is typical of thrillers is a put-off. Even so, it is an interesting watch for how the medium is used.

  • Dum Laga Ke Haisha

That there is a pointer at the scores of social dynamics in an arranged marriage – pressure, gut, looks, submissiveness and so on. Dum Laga Ke Haisha has captured it all so well and in just the right measure to not make it dramatic and yet keeping you completely engrossed.

  • Raazi

A thriller that has your heart beating constantly for the protagonist’s safety is gripping because it is based on real life events and has strong performances.

  • Bubble Gum

A clean, fresh movie about growing up in 1980's India. Family, friendship and love (in that order) are the elements of this teen-capers flick.

  • Tribhanga

So, so many difficult issues dealt with a light, matter-of-factly hand. Lots of ground covered in a breezy 90 minutes without being rushed. An engaging watch from start to finish.

  • Kahaani

An extremely quirky atmosphere is created by the camera, the narrative, the sound, the music and Vidya Balan. An experience that might seem incomplete if not watched on the big screen.

  • Mulk

An extremely gripping courtroom drama despite the standard and more or less predictable ups-downs-climax. Helped by rock-solid writing and performances.
