Shamitabh
It all ends at the hospital, as most of Balki’s films do. Coming out of the theatre, I couldn’t help but think of his morbid fascination with sickness, disabilities and abnormalities. Sadly, the film feels more manipulative than sensitive. And also extremely boring.

The first half promises a cat-and-mouse game, but, post interval, it fumbles to a denouement...

Fatso
Leaves you curiously unmoved and strangely untouched. It has the feel of a TV drama, not a big screen feature.

Listen... Amaya
Doesn’t do justice to the nostalgia that it merrily plays on. A rather limp, listless and protracted narrative.

Bahubali
Mainstream cinema has a way of simplifying the most complex of issues, but in that simplicity, it also manages to touch a chord, reach out and even initiate debate. Prakash Jha fails to do any of that with Aarakshan.

Shakun Batra’s film has no plot, just the problems of getting a family together so that grandpa can get a family photo for his 90th birthday.

Bhansali's painterliness wreaks havoc on the subject. The visual excesses distract from the basic emotions. You don’t feel for the central character.

The film loses out on complexity by opting for a way too easy narrative: the rural brutes vs us, the city slickers.

Bejoy Nambiar’s film could have been an intriguing exploration of the vagaries of fate and fortune. But, unfortunately, as with most films released this week, it falls short of its inherent possibilities.

Fails to offer a persuasive portrayal of individuals and relationships, the largely ineffective acting making a further hash of an already tenuous narrative.

A bit like Deewar, a lot like Namak Haraam. With Jha one would have expected a lot more complexity than what’s delivered.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag
There is a compelling biopic hidden somewhere in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, about an athlete with a traumatic childhood facing up to and conquering the ghosts of his past. But the overwritten film meanders aimlessly.
