Not A Love Story
Critic reviews and ratings
-
...a wonderful illustration of how the accurate approach to storytelling can levitate a film.
-
...is not an easy film to watch. Crime has never looked more unglamorous on screen.
-
...engaging and watchable – if for nothing else, for the flashes of the RGV of yore.
-
Ram Gopal Varma is in his elements this time...
-
It's Varma's old hunting ground-there's an animal inside each of us. And if you have the stomach for it, it's worth a watch.
-
RGV shows us that we don't need big actors, lavish sets or mammoth budgets to make credible cinema. A good film just needs a filmmaker getting the most out of his skill, tact and resources.
-
...an interesting study of the darker and more devious spots of friendly neighbourhood types.
-
...is not a bad film!
-
Superlative performances hook you into a disgusting story that comes from newspapers despite RGV going even crazier with his camera and sound departments.
-
...the film is no great shakes. But it's an alright thriller with a few moments that definitely unnerve you.
-
The film has some nice moments, only if it was not spoilt by the jarring background score and oh yes, those designed to drive-you-up-the-wall camera movements.
-
The making of this film so soon after the Grover murder is as macabre as the killing itself.
-
This is probably the closest Varma is going to get to a Heer-Ranjha story.
-
It does, seemingly, have a real story to tell and a pertinent point to make but in the end is an opportunity lost.
-
...gets mired by poor story-telling. Despite having a very gruesome and shocking subject, the faulty narrative makes it lose its impact leading to boredom.
-
We delve deeper into neither the young dream-chasers of a scary celeb industry nor chilling procedurals of an infamous police case, let alone the juicy tabloid drama that followed it. The narrative is predictably linear. Tsk. Waste.
-
It's far from Varma's best work, but it's not entirely unwatchable.
-
It is half-experiment and half-RGV of old: misdirected and stultifying at its worst, it's highs marked with superb performances and a handful of riveting scenes.
-
There are many lows but a few trademark Varma highs.
-
All Ramu seems to be saying is 'look at me,' and we've seen most of that before. This is a film made in bad taste, and -- with apologies to Mr Capote -- in old blood.
-
...a movie so shamefully voyeuristic, and so inept.
-
When Not A Love Story started playing, it seemed like a bad film so enjoyable that it could be recommended. But soon, you realise that this kind of skullduggery wouldn't be advisable for anyone.
-
...a pointless and mindless movie...
