Critic reviews and ratings

  • We’ve rarely seen women on screen who are so uninhibited about their life, sexuality and desires. In that respect, ‘Veere Di Wedding’ is a brave effort indeed.

  • ...has a bold theme that defies stereotypes and delivers a shock value.

  • Director Shashanka Ghosh has managed to develop the right chemistry between his four leads and that’s the film’s greatest strength -- that beneath all the cuss words and sex jokes you get a whiff of genuine friendship.

  • ...lands several blows to the patriarchy while never giving up its masala entertainer roots. It is the kind of film that needs to work because of what it says.

  • ...is impactful especially because the lead quartet are enjoying themselves even while their film remains an unapologetic commentary on the lives of women in this setting.

  • ...is a fun ride, which squeezes past its creaky tropes and partial squelchiness by some smart casting choices, and perky performances.

    Critic rating (?)

  • While this one works as a breezy film on girl bonding, it gets a bit tedious while taking a stab at patriarchy. In fact, a message it hopes to convey on the societal pressures endured by women is lazily tucked into a dialogue. “Pehle shaadi karo, phir bachcha, phir bachcha hua toh doosre bachche ka pressure.” It almost seems like old whine in a new bottle.

  • It's being hailed as a female buddy flick and the girls are open about drinking, having flings and discussing sex, which by and large is taboo in our films, so it's brave in that sense. But it has nothing to do with women empowerment. Once you accept that and watch the film you are in for a crazy ride.

  • All four friends are distinguished by their appearances and roles, but they are essentially the same person -- conventional to the core. There's no real rebellion, just a consuming love for fashion and faux feminism where every zinger flying out of their mouth sounds like something you've heard on a sitcom or favourited on your Pinterest wall.

  • ...a well performed and gorgeously looking Balaji’s soap opera that fails in giving that ‘charam sukh’ (lacks soul).

    Critic rating (?)

  • It’s strange that filmmakers take some risk when mounting a film like Veere Di Wedding, and then don’t back it with sensible writing all the way through, trusting the audience to understand a modicum of nuance and subtlety.

  • Bold, yes; beautiful, but of course; brave, not quite.

    Critic rating (?)

  • Poor screenplay is cleverly backed up by funny dialogues which give comic relief to this drama in disguise.

  • You want to facepalm several times but it's all frothy and bubbly as Champagne...

  • The good part - Veere Di Wedding isn't as frivolous as Rhea Kapoor's other productions like Aisha and Khoobsurat. It does break a few stereotypes with its story-telling. It's a film that you cannot completely dismiss for being too bold, too outrageous or too offensive.

  • Everything about this film is deliberately put together, like the cushion covers co-ordinated with kaftans and teacups. If only, like Meera, who carries her girth with aplomb, all of Veere Di Wedding had been as natural and comfortable.

    49

    Critic rating (?)

  • ...is a lazy film, too content with easy zingers. Issues are raised and resolved in so little time, it looks like a new scripting technique: premature elucidation. But whenever the film doesn’t try too hard to show you how hip it is, it’s not entirely unlikeable.

    49

    Critic rating (?)

  • ...if you are not looking for radical departures from norm and are happy watching a film that seeks to blur gender expectations without shaking the boat too much, Veere di Wedding could pass muster. Does it give you your money's worth? It does. Does it break new ground? Fat chance.

    39

    Critic rating (?)

  • It may be a buddy comedy but it is not among the best in the genre, not even top five.

    39

    Critic rating (?)

  • ...at a time when the gender question is in such a serious churn and feminism debate at its sharpest, Veere’s light-hearted and giddy take would seem entirely out of depth.

    39

    Critic rating (?)

  • ...largely contrived and forgettable.

    39

    Critic rating (?)

  • Tries too hard to be cool and “contemporary”, comes across as superficial instead.
