Jaanisaar
Critic reviews and ratings
-
...the tale is indeed a remarkable one. If only there were performances to back these inspiring, spirited characters, and a film that worked together as a whole, instead of delightful separates.
-
...it's a case of cinematic self-indulgence that doesn't deserve to be compared to Ali's masterpiece Umrao Jaan.
-
You get the grandeur and the old-world charm that you expect from an Ali film, but unfortunately he seems to have lost touch with the finesse.
-
...Ali falters in picking his lead protagonists and herein lies the difference between Jaanisaar and his magnum opus Umrao Jaan. This canvas looks appealing but it doesn’t converse with you beyond a point.
-
...ultimately the film's undoing - its inability to make viewers care about anything in the film.
-
...a laughable mockery of Indian history.
-
Despite being written by two much respected writers, Jaanisaar has an abysmal screenplay.
-
...a cautionary tale of a film with a half-baked script and pretend patriotism.
-
The only upside: the wonderful costumes.
-
...a catalogue of problems, not least the messed-up script...
-
One can only imagine the atrocities Indians braved during the British occupation. But occupying a seat to watch this film would be counted as self-inflicted torture, as you now know what you're signing up for.
