Critic reviews and ratings

  • Watch the film for its hilarious comedy, slick all around performances and ultimately for it's powerful message of love and acceptance...

  • Filled with subversions both major and minor, the Aanand L Rai production is packed with superbly sketched characters and spot-on performances. It uses a light touch to launch a heavy attack on homophobia, general intolerance and repressive tendencies, and the very foundation of the conventional Indian family.

  • ...watch it for the performances and the 'chaska' of love, with two men pouring their hearts out for the world to see and accept.

  • ...amasses a clutter of complicated issues and sometimes comes across as more messy than meaningful. But the delightful cast, utterly natural in their confusion as well as revolt, compelled me to cheer for its easily resolved conflicts even if deep down I wondered at the possibility of such extraordinarily ideal understanding.

  • ...‘normalizes’ the same sex relationship debate with a quirky, funny and acceptable human approach. Having an easy, unforced and pleasantly feel good cinematic language that sees its lead actor Ayushmann Khurrana in top form as it nails the subject matter with glee.

  • ...is funny, brave, smart and thoughtful...

  • Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan's achievement lies not just in going where Bollywood has not gone before. It is in consistently portraying Kartik (Ayushmann Khurrana) and Aman (a superb Jitendra Kumar in his debut film role) as just a couple, not 'homo' or 'hetero'.

  • ...is an important film that talks about an important subject conveyed in the simplest manner without sounding preachy at any given point. It touches your heart, makes you laugh and stays with you for a long time.

  • ...is a decent attempt and makes an interesting comment on homophobia which exists in our country.

  • The extent to which this film will influence minds or shape opinion on our queer brethren is debatable, but it’s surely a breezy watch. And in this era of iron-fisted rule, it might just be a good idea.

  • ...there is enough to enjoy and appreciate here. It takes a difficult subject and executes it with some flair.

  • In an interview, Ayushmann described Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan as an introduction to homosexuality for an average Indian homophobe. The film might work as that. But for those of us who aren’t in this target group, it doesn’t connect enough. Though it’s heartening that with this film and Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga last year, Bollywood has at least begun the conversation.

  • In its attempt to keep things light, the film becomes loud and meanders. In its attempt to make a point, it breaks into spurts of short speeches. In the one aspect, it wants to create awareness about, it doesn’t go beyond a couple of wisecracks.

    Critic rating (?)

  • The film may be erratic in parts, but its entertainment quotient is delightfully high for a film tackling a clash between conservatism and freedom, between tradition and modernity.

  • Audiences going for Hindi cinema’s first queer romance will be disappointed. Yes, you get a kiss between the male leads (two, in fact), but no real insight into their relationship.

  • This is an amusing film, in parts, but it is not, by any stretch of imagination, a ground breaking work on Gay love.
