Critic reviews and ratings

  • ...gives a great overview of one of the finest sports player of our country. The performance of Parineeti Chopra, the dramatic and emotional moments and the appropriate pace of the film contributes highly to the film’s appeal.

  • ...is not the best biopic in the world. It’s flawed like we all humans are. But the movie left an overwhelming impression of empowerment, joy and made me emotional.

  • ...a feel good tale about India’s poster girl for Badminton. Saina, the film could have been more memorable, but it doesn’t fall short of inspiring the youth.

  • Director Amole Gupte initially shows signs of not getting too over awed by Saina Nehwal, not shying away from showing some chinks in her armour. But he doesn't follow through with his examination all the way.

  • Biopics have simple and unbroken rules of following the template that has been set by multiple real-life stories before. Some have been dumbed down, some have been remarkably real. Amole Gupte’s Saina tilts slightly towards the former, and the filmmaker puts the dumbing down to good use.

  • Parineeti Chopra gives us a good, solid Saina Nehwal. When she raises her racket after a hard-fought win, you cheer.

  • Even with its flaws, Saina does provoke some thought, is moving in places and has some fun to offer.

  • The overwritten script, which includes a voiceover by its subject, still falls short of revealing her inner life. Sports biopics and documentaries often seek to discover the unknowable – the higher force that propels athletes to excellence.

  • ...despite being predictable and sluggish at some places, seems like something Parineeti Chopra would be proud of. It has its shortcomings but it is a one-time watch.

  • Watch Saina to get a shot of inspiration, but do not expect it to scratch beneath the surface.

  • Eventually, authenticity isn’t as important as capturing the essence of a person and evoking emotion. Saina, shining with sincerity and hard work, also misses this crucial point.

    Critic rating (?)

  • Parineeti Chopra gives it her best shot, Manav Kaul lifts provides the film a fillip when he is on the screen and the badminton action is staged with aplomb. But, despite the pluses, Amole Gupte's Saina is a mishit.

    Critic rating (?)

  • To be fair to Amole Gupte, the problem partly lies in how reductive the blueprint for a sports drama has been made by filmmakers, who seem to succumb to the temptations of the trappings that come with the genre.
