The Fakir Of Venice
Critic reviews and ratings
-
The film thankfully doesn’t look dated even after all these years. And it’s subject matter too remains relevant even now.
-
...The Fakir Of Venice which could have been the debut of Farhan Akhtar as an actor and Anand Surapur as a filmmaker is steady and assured in its believe which does opens the gate for a debate.
-
A unique story told rather plainly. I’m not asking for drama but would have liked a bit of a punch in the story-telling. Nevertheless, can be seen as a news item turned into a film owing to seemingly effortless performances by both lead actors.
-
Had the makers worked on the screenplay and made it a tad more complex, it would have been a great film...
-
Director Anand Surapur has a good story to tell, but the treatment feels dated and stretched.
-
...surely has an intriguing title that may trigger questions such as how precisely did the ascetic find himself in the city of canals, to begin with. But once these doubts are clarified, there’s little to inspire one to stay glued to one’s seat.
-
...boasts of an interesting plot and bravura performance by Annu Kapoor. But the flawed execution, festival-style narrative and most importantly the delayed release will go against the film heavily.
-
...listless fare.
-
What could have been a fabulous satire on the world of art ends up being tedious because it is directed badly, except for a masterclass in acting by Annu Kapoor.
-
Released a decade after it was made The Fakir of Venice, disappoints with the lack of alchemy between the lead actors.
-
The decade between its completion and its release shows in every frame. Mumbai and Venice are visibly less crowded than they now are and the actors are younger and more energetic, but the movie’s art world con made little sense then and even less sense in 2019.
-
Director Surapur, an ad film-maker otherwise, shows an ability to draw good performances from his actors, which is a big part of the job, but where he fails is in creating heightened drama.
-
Everything in the film feels half-hearted. Neither Farhan Akhtar’s charm nor Annu Kapoor’s commitment can save this semi-baked effort. To be fair to it, it is not excruciating or insufferable, it is simply immensely forgettable.
