The Zoya Factor
Critic reviews and ratings
-
...is a fun, frothy film that pits superstitions versus strategy and self-belief versus luck. And delightfully uses India’s cricket craze to deliver a thoroughly enjoyable, entertaining film.
-
...this well-written and well-acted film is a paisa vasool rom-com.
-
Perhaps the novel’s novel ‘filmy’ quality that amazing marriage of fact & fiction, faith and conviction, dream and reality seemed perfect for a big screen adaptation or a tv series or say a digital series if we see what’s happening around on prime digital platforms.
-
...it’s almost there but not quite.
-
...is a feel-good popcorn entertainer that works chiefly due to concept, treatment, humour and performances.
-
A love story is only as good as its leads, and Abhishek Sharma gets the casting right.
-
...a movie that both suffers from miscasting and benefits from perfect casting. Abhishek Sharma’s shambolic romantic comedy, based on the bestselling 2008 novel by Anuja Chauhan, gives top billing to Sonam Kapoor, but all the attention is hogged by the name that follows hers in the credits. Malayalam star Dulquer Salmaan...
-
...rather than putting its cast and breezy premise to good use, the film runs amok and you slowly begin to wonder why you should sit through 2.5 hours of this.
-
For a rom-com which needs to be light on its feet, hitting fours and sixes as it goes along, the writing is not as supple as it should have been. Too many slog overs here.
-
The film has a winning premise, just like the book it has been inspired by, Anuja Chauhan's The Zoya Factor, but Abhishek Sharma and Chauhan herself, fail to give the same magic and madness to the adaptation.
-
Despite the film being a rickety ride and Dulquer Salmaan not being utilised to his best potential, the Malayalam star still ends up playing the most rounded role of the lot.
-
Attempts to keep things light, which work at times and don’t at others. A film that wouldn’t kill you if you watched it, but one you wouldn’t miss if you didn’t.
-
...the Dulquer factor is the only saving grace of this bland confection. His charisma and cricket are up to the mark.
-
...could have been a thoroughly enjoyable comedy. It ends up being a scrappy, erratic knock where a few crisp strokes are hopelessly outnumbered by a host of ungainly heave-hos. The film does not hit the sweet spot often enough to translate into either a truly rousing cricket film or a memorably moving love story.
-
...offers little cheer to those invested in the return of the Hindi romantic comedy or the halfway-decent post-Lagaan cricket film.
