  • ...could've been a riveting fare, but doesn't rise beyond the ordinary in the final tally.

  • ...is strictly for old time’s sake.

  • ...the film is not a total let-down. It has an interesting protagonist, an arresting story (sadly told in a simplistic fashion), and some effective moments. The gripe is this could have been a far, far better film. Too bad, really.

  • ...Mr Ghai you're the maker of Kaalicharan, Vishwanath, Karz, Hero, Ram Lakhan, Karma, Pardes and Taal. Permit us to just rewind to your past glory.

  • ...has a soul that is lacking in a lot of films today. It has a message also, which one can take back home. What it lacks is the grip, the magic and the experience of a Bollywood film.

  • ...shows promise in the beginning, but soon enough, its potential is lost even though the climax offers some inspiration.

    39

    Critic rating (?)

  • From effortlessly epic to unintentionally campy, Ghai’s school of entertainment has taken quite a beating.

    29

    Critic rating (?)

  • ...the once upon a time Showman of the film industry Subhash Ghai falters completely in putting together a great show in Kaanchi.

    29

    Critic rating (?)

  • This may have had power 40 years back. Now it is just tired, and jaded.

    Critic rating (?)

  • ...throughout this unending saga it's pretty clear that she is a rebel without a cause. That's just one of the many problems with Ghai's heroine-centric film.

  • It’s always sad to watch the decline of a once successful artiste. Sadder still to write this review. There is just one word to describe Kaanchi: boring.

    19

    Critic rating (?)

  • The best movie Subhash Ghai has made in 15 years is Iqbal. Handing Nagesh Kukunoor the cheque as producer is probably the only thing he has got right since directing Taal in 1999.

    19

    Critic rating (?)

  • With gratingly bad performances and a poorly written script that doesn't quite know what to do with its noble intentions, the film's greatest redeeming quality is that it ends.

    19

    Critic rating (?)

  • ...an ancient tragedy of behemoth proportions. Let's just hope that Mr Ghai regroups and doesn't end up like the other veteran director that hires his own students to make and break his movies.

    09

    Critic rating (?)

  • The screenplay is so poor that it makes you cringe and laugh at the same time. The dialogues do not match what is depicted on the screen, the editing is too sketchy, and the acting is poor.
