That Girl in Yellow Boots
Critic reviews and ratings
-
...a significant step forward for Kashyap. It is well-nigh his most controlled film to date: the style, fluid and unobtrusive, complements the theme rather than overshadow it.
-
...yet another outstanding example of independent cinema.
-
...is quintessential independent cinema.
-
Dark. Disturbing. Distressing. Kudos to Anurag Kashyap for handling such a volatile subject with deadpan honesty.
-
...it's director Anurag Kashyap who brings out the best in each character. He does it again proving such movies can be made with a low-budget.
-
The gritty nature of the film and the subject is not something all of us can handle for it takes guts to accept the truth about the society that we are a part of. It's an important film but not one I'd want to watch again.
-
...it is the climax of this film that stays with you long after you've stepped out of the theatre. A betrayal so big, that it stuns the boots off you, yellow or otherwise.
-
...is another fine specimen of Anurag Kashyap's style of filmmaking.
-
TGIYB, in the end, is a middling effort that has its share of highs, but leaves you unmoved and slightly disappointed.
-
Even if the story itself leaves you wanting more, the storytelling makes you go the distance.
-
...is spot on in almost all departments. It is carried forward by a stellar performance from its cast, especially Kalki Kochelin, who's also the co-writer.
-
Anurag Kashyap narrates it slowly, bit by bit, with a lingering calm and control that makes the film unsettling and affecting.
-
...a decent film and manages to engross you in bits and parts.
-
Too bad it's not that good!
-
Watch only if you're in the mood for something not run-of-the-mill.
-
If you haven't had enough of films showing the underbelly of Mumbai or are big fans of Kalki Koechlin this is the film for you. Else, all you may like in That Girl In Yellow Boots will be the Yellow Boots alone.
-
Anurag Kashyap's ability to create this kind of grunge, and characters who live on the margins, is matchless. But by now we've got used to it, as well as his skill in laying it out for our delectation. By now we want the next level.
-
It is, what they call, a quickie: As true for the movie's subject, as for its unsatisfying outcome.
-
Though incest, child abuse and other evils do take place in our society, watching a film about it—and one that deals with it so casually-- is not an experience to look out for.
-
...scratch the arresting surface and we're left with a subplot-heavy narrative whose discursions end up undermining her story. Several sequences work very well on their own but they don't build cohesively and they don't detonate in your mind with a bang by the end of the film.
