Critic reviews and ratings

  • ...a more than better attempt at the genre that makes us go weak in the knees. But its not bloated, not sentimental. It's witty, it's smart, it's more comedy than romantic comedy, and it features an ensemble of lovable and whimsical yet strangely familiar characters that make real life seem less dreary.

  • ...a film which leaves you with a happy feeling. It drags in parts but is worth a watch, at least for Saif's performance.

  • ...a fun film with a melodious, modern take on individuals and pyaar.

  • Self-deprecating humour, charming as it may be, is a rarity in Hindi films and ‘Happy Ending’ is one such film. It takes a jibe at the ‘formula’ that most box office hits follow, even while it panders to it – albeit smartly.

    Critic rating (?)

  • An urban romcom that tries to get a grapple on love. It is charming in its own way, but ultimately ends up having very little more than a regular romedy, as it likes to call itself.

  • Seen before, done before. Narrative styles, conflicts, background scores and supporting characters have begun to overlap. All that differ are the littler details—professions, environments, guest appearances.

    Critic rating (?)

  • If only Raj-DK had kept it as short, simple and precise, this would be recommended as a two-time watch. In its current avatar, one should be more than enough.

    59

    Critic rating (?)

  • In the rather patchy but inoffensive Happy Ending, the narrative style is bright and breezy enough to help them paper over the flaws in the screenplay.

    49

    Critic rating (?)

  • The film does exceedingly well on the craft front as it moves away from conventional techniques but fails to add a new dimension on the content front. But, you can always watch it for clever one liners and sharp jokes.

    49

    Critic rating (?)

  • ...a decent one-time watch.

    49

    Critic rating (?)

  • It is sure disappointing that a film which gives you hopes of being an intelligent, witty satire, ends up being as predictable and soppy as the film it intended to make fun of.

    49

    Critic rating (?)

  • Good thing about Happy Ending is that it's breezy as a rom-com is supposed to be. It is genuinely filled with amusing moments.

    49

    Critic rating (?)

  • Listless and phoney though it is as cinema, Happy Ending has some chuckle-inducing moments, and one secret weapon in Govinda.

    49

    Critic rating (?)

  • This is cinema that laughs at itself but then does not really know where to go from there. Watch it for the actors though.

    49

    Critic rating (?)

  • ...is sadly not as wacky as it could have been, but it’s genuinely funny and unobjectionable, which makes it easy to forgive the film its many shortcomings.

    44

    Critic rating (?)

  • ...at its core, is pretentious and doesn’t quite live up to expectations, save for Govinda, who lights up the screen with his mere presence and those legendary moves.

    39

    Critic rating (?)

  • It's disappointing that director duo Krishna DK and Raj Nidimoru (Go Goa Gone) have come with as film that is pretentious and hollow, embracing the very cliches it makes fun of.

    39

    Critic rating (?)

  • This is a film that wants to be many things all at once - a rom-com between a fading star and the next big thing, also a clever satire on Bollywood.

    39

    Critic rating (?)

  • Falling into the same rut, Govinda is the only thing to smile about here.

    39

    Critic rating (?)

  • A movie that opts for straight-laced romance over sex-charged comedy. And when you do that, you don’t end on a happy note.

    39

    Critic rating (?)

  • I suspect that somewhere in there was a genuinely sparkling and subversive love story. Sadly, it never emerges.

    39

    Critic rating (?)

  • Surely directors this smart should know that you can’t mock a genre and embrace it at the same time.

    39

    Critic rating (?)

  • A dull romcom and an even duller parody of the genre, this film falls dead flat.

    39

    Critic rating (?)

  • ...piles up many more as it goes along, making the film a series of been-here, seen-this moments, and a wasted opportunity.

    29

    Critic rating (?)

  • Of the 136 minutes run-time, only the last 20 minutes or so are bearable and resemble anything of what a film should be.
