Ungli
Critic reviews and ratings
-
D'Silva has taken dollops of cinematic liberties and one can even see the residue of Rang De Basanti (which he co-wrote) but the movie does connect. And that is what matters.
-
The good looking bunch of actors with decent performances managing-to-keep-you-hooked kind of script and a fairly laidback, easy, not in your face direction could have made this film wonderful, but for the dialogues.
-
Makes you feel empowered, even though you can see their solutions are way too simplistic.
-
...does fall short of expectations because of a sketchy plot and a laughable back story, teamed with a pointless culmination and some very cringe worthy dialogues by Milap Zaveri, but it's entertaining while it lasts.
-
...if you are looking for a fun ride, Ungli won’t disappoint. But because of its simplistic approach, Ungli is only entertaining, not thought-provoking.
-
Rensil, who also doubles up as the film's story and screenplay writer, seems to have let off all his vents against the system in one breath. One can understand the intentions behind him making the film, but there are moments that could have been handled better.
-
The film has an interesting premise, but the second half and shoddy climax does Ungli to any chances of it leaving a lasting impression on us.
-
Great promise foiled by dismal execution.
-
The film points a finger at our society, and rightly so. But much of the film is pointless too.
-
...this apology of a 'coming-of-age celebration' of India's youngsters falls flat on its face, and it is definitely not going anywhere.
-
...begins with a bang and that’s about it!
-
The problem with Ungli is a very amateurish screenplay - one that seems to have been written without much will.
-
This could have been a highly impactful, immersing film that, despite its intent, falls tragically short.
-
...the film is so steeped in naiveté and trades in such simplistic solutions, it's as if you're listening to a Class V moral science lesson.
-
...takes a chestthumping, crowd-pleasing concept and turns it into a preachy mess that might discourage future attempts at this genre.
-
The intention may have been good but the plot is silly and way to unrealistic! It's kind of clear that some of it was possibly salvaged in post production but quite a bit was beyond repair.
-
...when a film is more interesting for what it isn't than for what it is, giving it a miss might be the most prudent option.
-
...lukewarm.
-
The film has the distinct stamp of a brand of exaggerated, schmaltzy activism far from reality but in the garb of realism—the consummate example of this is Rang De Basanti, also D’Silva’s script.
-
...feels as dead as its surroundings.
-
A sloppy display of corporate social responsibility by a production house that usually indulges in fluff.
-
...the most amateurish piece of work I’ve seen in a while, all fingers and thumbs.
