Aiyaary
Critic reviews and ratings
-
Those expecting the clever Neeraj Pandey twists will probably be left wanting more. But ‘Aiyaary’ has measured performances that resound louder than its bombastic score, and they alone make it a worthwhile watch.
-
A decent thriller with a valid crux that could've engaged much better if it weren’t so slow. You’re left with too much time figure out the loopholes in the twists and turns.
-
...is a throw away effort from director Neeraj Pandey, where the only saving grace is Manoj's act.
-
...tackles a bold subject, one that is worth exploring alongside the frequent tales of battlefield valour. There is palpable and relatable outrage at the rot within the system, but the response is inchoate and not particularly clever.
-
...isn’t taut enough to qualify for an edge-of-the-seat thriller. The plot is emaciated. The narration, which revolves around deception and sense of duty, is long-winding.
-
It’s difficult to imagine that the maker of films such as A Wednesday!, Special 26 and Baby, Pandey would resort to such a pretentious thriller.
-
His was a story which needed further exploration but Pandey seems to have lost steam midway, abondoning it to its fate like an overburdened midwife.
-
...misses the mark and is a huge letdown on the account of its flawed script and the lengthy runtime.
-
...is half-baked, simplistic and for the most part, a slog.
-
You wish someone would teach Indian directors to tell their stories simply and quickly. They'd be so much more thrilling.
-
...touted as the espionage explosion aimed to expose the corruption in the Army, sadly ends up exposing the erstwhile prolific Neeraj Pandey’s shortcomings as a filmmaker in this thriller that is nothing but a ticking time bomb that has forgotten its ‘mission’ to explode and make the expected roar. Kya bore.
-
..flat lighting, dull visuals, lazy editing and zero pacing.
-
Almost every Pandey film has had a kinetic energy that never decelerates, but Aiyaary is a different breed. It doesn’t know what it wants to be.
-
...wants to be a daring thriller that calls out smarmy politicians and arms dealers. But it only fires blanks.
-
This is Neeraj Pandey's weakest film so far, especially the shoddy writing.
-
Pandey has a know-it-all approach to the world of armed forces only he is not able to bring it alive for cinema. Also missing is the humour that he is able to effortlessly intersperse in between moments of high drama.
-
...you can't help but come up with conspiracy theories on how the filmmakers could've so horribly lost the plot.
-
Pandey has tried hard to show the mirror to corrupt politicians by using lines like “Jis issues se kuch logon ka faayeda ho ussey solve nahi karte balki barkaraar rakhte hai,” but unfortunately his direction lacks bite and depth.
-
What could have been an engaging tale of army corruption ends up a convoluted film with confusing narrative devices.
-
...is sketchily-written and not compelling. It tests patience even if you are a fan of the genre.
-
Pace and bluster cannot compensate for lack of substance. This wannabe James Bond flick is nothing but a blast of hot air.
-
It's a bloated, prolonged mess of misplaced purpose that digresses from military misdeeds to animal cruelty.
