Peepli [Live]
Critic reviews and ratings
-
It's a well penned and well executed film that deals with a serious issue in a witty and entertaining manner. Although very real, it creates a world full of vivid characters and incidents and keeps the viewer engrossed throughout.
-
...a brilliant satire which is riveting and heartfelt. Most importantly, it makes you think, and rethink.
-
It has its heart in the right place, and it's a heart backed by a ticking mind.
-
...the most intelligent and humorous Indian commentary in long.
-
...well-researched, brilliantly-written and effectively documented creation that hasn't negotiated its wry vision for big screen. I'd go to the extent of saying it's the best Hindi film I've seen this year.
-
We know now that the 'we serve masala because that is what the audience demands' days are numbered. **fingers crossed**
-
...it's a movie everyone should watch. Not just to see how a story can be told but also how it can be told with affection and attitude.
-
The high point of the film indeed is its smart and sassy script. But more than all this, it's the life-like portrayals that add a refreshing authenticity to the film.
-
...strongly recommended!
-
The message is strong but doesn’t hit you with the force you expect it to. This could be deliberate, given that the film underplays the histrionics and keeps the tone light, probably to reach out to a larger audience.
-
A brilliant satire.
-
...an entertaining, original and relevant film, which tackles a serious problem with just the right touch of satire and humour. This is a slice of real cinema, raunchy, rancid and rare, and may we get more of the same please.
-
First time director Anusha has not only written a taut script but also executed the story effectively.
-
...a simplistic yet engaging picture of a sad reality.
-
The on-goings in the film have an authentic touch and that's why the screenplay manages to evoke humour and pathos in equal doses.
-
Anusha Rizvi is an astonishing addition to the repertoire of directorial forces that matter.
-
...makes a point and poignantly at that.
-
...immersing, entertaining, topical, yes; but not all that insightful.
-
For avoiding the route of fantasyland, for narrating a story hooked on fact rather than fiction, and for being remarkably observant about the quirks, anxieties and hopes of the BPL (those subsisting below the poverty line), Rizvi makes an auspicious debut as a director of substance.
-
...the kind of film we need more of.
-
An extremely well-made first feature is also extremely overfamiliar, what with its initial investment in farmer suicides giving way to easy potshots at our media.
-
Although it sags towards the end, Peepli Live is carried on the shoulders of its talented cast...
-
In spite of having that heart of gold, Peepli Live lacks a certain profoundness. The movie does nothing but sit on a fence, showing you that there is a solution but no one wants to work it out.
